How Would You Spend Your 26th Birthday?

Having moved into our new apartment at ASU, our view has substantially improved over that of our previous abode (seeing the concrete wall a foot away from our apartment windows in Korea!). Jen is so much happier now that we have so much sunlight coming into our home now too. We now have a beautiful mountain range in our backyard. We often see herds of sheep and goat wandering and grazing the mountains and we’ve often been graced with great sunsets and misty peaks too. We are a little bit out of town, but it’s an easy bus ride downtown and for the view that we get, I’m happy to be nestled into our little valley.

It had just finished raining this afternoon and the
clouds lingered into the evening to give us a beautiful
backdrop for the sunset that was happening behind us.

There is a lot of construction going on since the valley that we’re in is somewhat protected from the winds and winter pollution (from the burning coal plants, garbage piles, and other pollutants). There are a few buildings that were already up when we arrived, but there a lot more foundations being dug right in front of us. These foundations are dug by hand and some of the workers have erected gers at the construction site.

To the left you can see our school track and the edge
of our football pitch.

This ger was put up in a matter of hours. It’s neat to see
just how fast these things go up. And the juxtaposition
of these gers scattered around the city next to modern brick
and concrete buildings is really neat to see.

So what does all of this have to do with how you spend your 26th birthday? Well, the Mongolians who live in the gers at the construction site this past weekend were enjoying a sunny Sunday and they were keeping themselves entertained by facing off in wrestling matches.

Pat is one of our history and geography teachers. Like us, he is new to Mongolia and he has been in the country for about two weeks. He turned 26 this past weekend. I can almost guarantee that he has had the best 26th birthday. Ever.
